About Quantum

Quantum is a Huss Top Spin ride located at the edge of Thorpe Park's central lake. The ride consists of a large gondola suspended between two rotating arms - as the arms swing the gondola in an increasingly wide arc (up to full 360-degree rotations), the gondola itself also tilts and rotates independently. The result is a ride that takes you through multiple orientations, including fully upside-down, while the lake passes beneath you.

The Top Spin format has been a staple of large theme parks for decades, and Quantum's lakeside position - with nothing but water visible during the overhead sections - adds a distinctive edge to the experience compared to a standard installation.

What to Expect

Quantum is more disorienting than it is physically punishing. The combined rotation of the main arms and the gondola means you lose track of which way is up fairly quickly, and the sustained inversion during full rotations is intense. Unlike a roller coaster where inversions pass quickly, a Top Spin holds them for longer and repeats them - which tests riders who are fine with the brief inversions on coasters but less comfortable with sustained ones.

The ride also has water jets that activate at certain points, which can add a light splashing effect. On a hot day this is refreshing; in cooler weather it's an unwanted extra.

Tips for Riding Quantum

  • Not for those prone to motion sickness. The compound rotation of Quantum - gondola spinning while arms swing - is one of the more disorienting combinations in the park. If you know you're susceptible, this is a high-risk ride.
  • Face the lake for the best view. During the overhead sections, riders facing the water get the most dramatic perspective. Seat allocation is fixed at loading.
  • Shorter queues than the coasters. Quantum draws a different crowd than the roller coasters and rarely hits extreme wait times. Good to fit in between coaster rides.
  • Water jets activate mid-ride. If keeping dry matters, be aware there can be light splashing during certain ride positions. Nothing like Tidal Wave, but worth knowing.
