The park runs its shortest days at the very start and end of the season, extends to early evening as school holidays arrive, and pushes to 9:00pm or later on the busiest summer weekends and through the October Fright Nights season. The closing-time trick most visitors miss

You can join a ride queue right up to the advertised closing time. Once you are in line, the ride keeps running until everyone in that queue has ridden - the park does not close a queue early to hit the clock.

This matters more than it sounds. Our recorded queue data consistently shows the final hour of the day being one of the two best windows for short waits, alongside the first hour after opening. Day visitors start drifting towards the car park well before closing, and the headline coasters routinely drop to half their afternoon peak. If there is one ride you want to go back on, the last hour is when to do it - and joining that queue at one minute to close is entirely legitimate.

The corollary is worth planning around too: on a 9:00pm closing date you are getting three more hours of park than on a 6:00pm date, and the last of those hours is the cheapest queueing of the day. Long-closing dates are consistently better value than their crowd levels suggest.

When rides actually start and stop

• Rides do not all open at 10:00 sharp. On a typical morning the headline coasters come online within the first few minutes, but it is common for one or two rides to start late after overnight testing. If your rope-drop target is showing as closed at 10:01, it is usually running within twenty minutes.
• The gates open before the rides do. You can normally get through the entrance and into the park before 10:00, which is exactly why arriving early works - you want to be standing at your first ride when it starts, not queueing at the turnstiles.
• Queues keep reporting past closing time. Because standby lines are still being cleared, wait times often keep updating for a while after the advertised close.
