About Hyperia

Hyperia opened in May 2024 as Thorpe Park's most significant new ride in over a decade, taking the title of the UK's tallest roller coaster. Built by Mack Rides - the Swiss manufacturer known for smooth, high-quality coasters - it stands 72 metres tall and reaches 81 mph on its 90-degree drop.

Unlike a launch coaster like Stealth, Hyperia is a traditional lift-hill design: a chain lift takes riders slowly to the summit before the plunge. The hyper coaster layout means the ride continues through a long sequence of airtime hills after the first drop, offering sustained thrills rather than a single intense moment.

What to Expect

The ascent on the chain lift builds anticipation as the park slowly shrinks below you. At 72 metres, the view is significant - on a clear day you can see for miles across Surrey and beyond. Then the 90-degree drop begins: riders go past vertical before accelerating to 81 mph at the bottom.

What distinguishes a hyper coaster from a typical big drop ride is what comes after: a series of large hills where riders experience strong "airtime" - the sensation of floating out of your seat as the train crests each hill. The Mack Rides construction makes Hyperia noticeably smoother than older coasters in the park. No inversions, but the sustained airtime is its own kind of intensity.

Tips for Riding Hyperia

  • First priority on arrival. As the park's newest and most talked-about ride, Hyperia consistently draws the longest queues. Ride it within the first 30 minutes of park opening if possible.
  • Front row for the view and the drop. The front row gives the most exposed experience - you can see the full 72 metres below you before the drop begins. Sub-queues for front row add wait time but are worth it on less busy days.
  • Back row for airtime. The rear seats amplify the airtime sensation over the hills - you get yanked over each crest more dramatically than the front.
  • Lockers required. All loose items must be stowed in paid lockers at the ride entrance.
  • Check the queue early. Use the live queue page to monitor wait times - on quiet weekdays, a patient visitor can ride Hyperia twice in a morning.
